Fridays in Ocotlan

Friday is home to the Ocotlán market, a regional tiangus where you can buy anything from kilos of tomatoes to a yoke for your oxen team. Ocotlan is also the former home of the late Rudolfo Morales, and the converted monastery next to the church houses some of his work, and the local municipal building a very lovely mural of Mexican history/life. If you are a huge fan of Morales or love to poke around and see different houses, we can also visit his former home and art studio.

On the way back to the city is a short stop in the square of Santo Tomás Jalieza, famous for it’s back strap woven cotton goods, from belts to table runners to backpacks to purses. The women are often working in the square and observing the work and how intricate it is makes any purchase you might make here even more special

Our next official stop is go to San Martín Tilcajete (home of the famous painted Wooden figures called Alebrijes),

We stop for lunch at a lovely roadside spot called Azucena Zapoteca, which also is home of the Jacobo and Maria Angeles shop for alebrijes.

After lunch and some wandering through workshops of alebrijes, we then head back into the city.
